Distributed content systems - with decentralized DNS

Post by virtual_master »

SyncNet distributed content browser
I found an interesting idea about a BitTorrent based distributed content browser. (still didn't tried how it works)
https://github.com/jminardi/syncnet

The author intends to extend it with a distributed DNS system. He seems to be inclined towards Colored Coins but mentions Namecoin also as possibility. May be it would be helpful to contact him and support him with advice if he decides to use Namecoin.

Future Work
As mentioned above, a major missing piece is domain resolution. This will be implemented with Colored Coins (or something similar such as namecoins.)

Yes, I sketched out the exact same infrastructure earlier but with some additional features which allow us to bypass censorship. I need to write a blog post about it, I'll try to reach out to him/her shortly.
DNS is much more than a key->value datastore.

This seems to be another project but also with torrent technology:
http://www.peersm.com/
http://www.peersm.com/?examples
https://github.com/Ayms/node-Tor/tree/master/install

Anonymous peer to peer and direct download inside browsers, Torrents like but encrypted and untrackable.

Examples of use:
Personal files
Upload personal photos into your browser with Peersm.
Send private hash_name to the family.
The family downloads the photos with Peersm.

Public files
Enter a public URL with Peersm and download the public file.
Entering the same URL with Peersm, other peers will now be able to download the file from your browser.
And further peers doing the same will download the file from different peers having it inside their browser.

Public and Personal files
Upload a personal file into your browser or download an URL with Peersm.
Send or post the hash_name so other peers can get it.
Other peers can now download the file from your browser using the hash_name.
And other peers will be able to download the file using the same hash_name from different peers having it inside their browser.

Protected files
Get a media link from some forums.
Download normally the link using your account on the site providing this link.
Upload the downloaded media file into your browser with Peersm.
Use Peersm's "change hash_name" feature and enter the initial link, Peersm will change the hash_name so it corresponds to the link.
Other peers using the same link with Peersm will now be able to download the media file from your browser without having to login to the initial site.
And other peers will be able to do the same from different peers having the media file inside their browser.

Encrypted files
Above example can be reproduced by encrypting the files with Peersm and providing the encryption keys to other peers.

I will put in this thread all torrent like content technologies which could be eventually integrated with the Namecoin domain technology to keep an overview.

Anomos - an experimental encrypted BitTorent is another interesting protocol which could be combined with Namecoin DNS
(offers security against copyright trolls)
Anomos is:

Anonymous, Encrypted BitTorrent
Free and Open Source Software – No Ads, No Spyware
A Standalone Client – No Background Services
Easy To Use
Availability for Windows, GNU/Linux and OSX

Here they are some other bittorrent experiments:

Some of them could be eventually interesting to be used with Namecoin.

SyncNet is built on top of BitTorrent Sync, which is a proprietary software(but free to use) so it would be of very limited use for us.

Bitcloud is an Open Source distributed database project.
Bitcloud is a universal protocol aiming to provide a massive distributed database and filesystem, or "virtual hard disk", capable of storing data encrypted and signed across all connected nodes, protecting privacy and guaranteeing quality of service (QoS).
Bitcloud is coin agnostic, meaning that it only pretends to be the base for the storage needs of future DAs. Bitcloud can use the escrow capabilities of Bitcoin and/or the contracts of Ethereum. Bitcloud pretends to substitute the way in which servers interconnect today and make much easier, secure and private for users, publishers and DAs to share files, and will be fundamental for the upcoming DAs.

May be could be it integrated with Namecoin for an easy content addressing.

StorJ - Decentralized Cloud System(DropBox)
https://github.com/Storj
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=53855.0
Weeks ago, the most illuminating part of the Texas Bitcoin Conference was not in the panels and speeches, but at the Hackathon. The Mastercoin Foundation ponied up a heavy purse to five groups of developers that are creating decentralized applications with extraordinarily disruptive implications.
The winner StorJ offered a convincing proof-of-concept, which is essentially a decentralized DropBox. This is not an original concept, however, StorJ is willing to work with a token system on the Mastercoin protocol that allows anyone to offer their computer memory storage and receive “tokens” for participating in the network. These tokens or meta-coins will trade on the Mastercoin decentralized exchange and the implication is their value should comport with user participation in the StorJ network. I am happy to imagine a world where I have the option to share some unused space on my hard drive and receive payment. Passive income, indeed.

StorJ tokens could work even better on Namecoin.

There's a similar blockchain-based scheme called MaidSafe:
http://maidsafe.net/

There's a loooooooooong interview with the guy on the Declare your Independence radio show, hours 2 and 3 of this episode:
http://www.freedomsphoenix.com/Media/15 ... loaded.htm

The guy is heavily funded, so probably has a chance at making it work if it's any good. We're still waiting for a white paper though to see how it really works. There is some source code, but there's a LOT of it, would take some time to vet.

Another possibilitie would be to use an OpenSource WebRTC technology for a distributed video and audio streaming:
http://www.webrtc.org/
WebRTC (Web Real-Time Communication) is an API definition drafted by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) that supports browser-to-browser applications for voice calling, video chat, and P2P file sharing without plugins.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WebRTC
The content could be streamed directly from the browser of the sender P2P.
The surfer clicks on the .bit address and the content starts without needing to have a centralized server.
When he is not online then there is no content feeding. Maybe could be enhanced with some distributed storage or more feeding addresses which are taken in order.(if the first is not available then the second and so on)
