Idea: VPN+ .bit proxy combination

Post by virtual_master »

I tried some free VPNs and .bit browsing in the same time with FoxyProxy.
The VPN service could be enhanced to support .bit domains as proxy. They would fit very well together - decentralized domain names for content providers with browsing anonymity and privacy for the users.

1. First start could be creating a VPN server + .bit proxy bundle.
Then anybody could start such a VPN service. This could be even connected to a VPN network like VPNgate to provide more gateway options for the users.
VPN Gate is an academic experiment project at the National University of Tsukuba, Japan based on VPN servers run by volunteers around the world. The server are scored after the quality of the service.
http://www.vpngate.net/
"The VPN Gate Academic Experiment Project wants volunteers to provide VPN servers.
If you have a Windows computer, please kindly provide your computer as a Public VPN Relay Server, and join to VPN Gate Experiment.
Setup of Public VPN Relay Server is very easy. After the setup will be completed, your computer will be registered on the Public VPN Relay Servers List page. Anyone on the world can communicate to the Internet via your computer as a relay."

Then if somebody connects with a VPNgate server(with .bit proxy) he/she also has a .bit domain support.

2. We could eventually convince some VPN service providers to make .bit domain support also.
First of all free providers and providers with quality free service like http://www.vpnbook.com which is accepting donations(BTC is still not on the list).
Asking to accept Bitcoin(and Namecoin) and supporting Namecoin could be brought together.

VPNbook - 3 day logging - good speed - free without limit - no registration required
VPNgate - 2 week logging - server scoring - free without limit - no registration required

Yes, I oversaw it or confused with another provider. You have right.
But the other points for the combination of VPN and .bit proxy could be still interesting.

Re. item 1, if I understand the Tsukuba project correctly, we first need at least one volunteer setting up a .bit-enabled VPN relay server, right?
After that, the people at Tsukuba Univ. only need to advertise it, e.g. by adding one column to their table of VPN servers.

Re. item 2, there is a good chance that some of the BTC-accepting VPN services are receptive to this idea. Have you already contacted vpnbook?

VPN:
- A. Purpose: providing anonymity and privacy for user, avoid censorship on user side
- B. Costs:
- a. setup of the VPN server
- b. bandwidth related costs

.bit Proxy:
- A. Purpose: providing access to decentralized content, avoid censorship on content provider side
- B. Costs:
- a. setup of the VPN server
- b. bandwidth related costs

VPN + .bit proxy bundle:
- A. Purpose: avoid censorship on user + content provider side
- B. Costs:
- a. setup of the VPN server + .bit proxy
- b. bandwidth related costs (it is the same for .bit proxy and VPN)

Particularly by surfing .bit domains with VPN you generate double bandwidth, once by the VPN provider and once by the .bit proxy provider. But if you are surfing through a (VPN+.bit proxy) bundle you save half of the bandwidth.
So there is a double win:
- enhanced purpose - avoid censorship on both sides
- reduced costs

Correct. I listed 2 combinations but they are thought about possibilities also. However the devil is in the details.
- The Tsukuba Univ project has his own server to be installed. Unfortunatelly the site where is stored http://www.softether.org/ is not available. Here this specific server needs to be combined with the .bit proxy. On client side they also have some special client. But I tried with OpenVPN client and it worked at the beginning but since yesterday I cannot connect any more.
- Existing VPN providers could be eventually convinced to make .bit support also.
- Another possibility would be to make an own OpenVPN server+.bit proxy bundle which could be installed by anybody.
They are some other variations also.
I didn't contacted any of them until now. I just posted here the concept idea to see what others think about it.
