I am curious, why was 0.11 branch removed?
I was able to download release 0.11.2, but the branch is gone.
That's doesn't seem very user friendly.

I'm unaware of an 0.11 branch or an 0.11.2 tag existing in Namecoin Core. AFAIK the first branch was 0.12 and the first tag was nc0.12.0rc1.

What have I downloaded, then?

This is what I got, just built it (successfully).

I intend to install this since I can't get 0.12rc2 to build (issue submitted).

Edit: I realized now, that only "nc*" releases are NameCoin releases, while other are merely forked Bitcoin Core releases.

Hmm, maybe we should document this better. Feel free to edit the "build instructions" page of the wiki to note that nc tags are Namecoin and the rest are Bitcoin.
