Post by phelix »

Namecoin v0.3.76
  • Various performance and network resilience improvements.
  • New command line option: -walletpath=customwalletfilename.dat
  • SendToNameUI: In the GUI coins can now be sent to a name*
Details in the full changelog.

Windows installer
: http://namecoin.info/files/Namecoin_v0.3.76_setup.exe (see hash and signature below)
Other binaries will follow, hopefully also for OS X this time.

Domob signed a "nc0.3.76" tag. You can check for his signature like this: git tag -v nc0.3.76

If you come from a version older than 0.3.75 please follow the 0.3.75 release notes. Be safe and make an encrypted backup of your wallet.dat file. Thanks to everybody who helped make this happen!

*SendToNameUI: Actually the coins go to the address holding the name at the moment of transaction creation. Note that address reuse has some privacy implications, so this is meant particularly for public donation addresses. (Squatters: leave the root namespace alone or we will change the UI such that names without namespace will use the id/ namespace :P).

Congratulations on another Namecoin release.

I hate squatters as much as the next guy... but I have a problem with the following mindset of the dev team:
phelix wrote:(Squatters: leave the root namespace alone or we will change the UI such that names without namespace will use the id/ namespace :P).
So basically... "use Namecoin for what we want you to use it for or we will implement a hard fork" ???

That doesn't sound very reassuring for the anti-censorship types that are attracted to Namecoin in the first place.

Just my two cents.

Hardfork? I was only talking about the GUI. Such a change would not be censorship but my honest wish to keep the blockchain small especially since everything can be done in the proper namespaces (or new ones) as well.

Signed the tag. And I agree with phelix, the proposed "anti-squatting" change is nowhere near a hardfork - it is just a matter of UI in the client.

@phelix, fair enough, but what would that really change when it comes to problematic squatters anyways?

Changing the GUI would only stop the meek from squatting a few namespaces.

The big boys could and would easily register thousands of namespaces wherever they choose programatically if they really wanted to.

And thanks.
What libcoin release? My pleasure.

The reason for my comment above is that people might find it more convenient to use just a name without namespace. This could lead into use of the root namespace for something similar to IDs which in turn would give squatters an incentive to squat the root namespace.

Fixed changelog link (was to the master branch "namecoinq" not to the release branch "namecoinq-release").
