how to backup properly

Post by heilen »

I used the backup wallet command to backup my wallet file, does that contain all the required files including domains and such, or is there another file I must back up as well?

thanks in advance

All you need is stored in your wallet. But, don't forget to backup regularly your wallet if you receive or send namecoins, or update domains, because that will generate new keys that won't be in your old wallet.

I have a question about this. These new generated keys, are required to keep your balance? So it's not enough to keep your addresses? I thought that would be the case, since all the transactions to/from an address is stored in the blockchain? Or aren't they?

A generated key is composed of :
- a private key
- a public key
An address derivate from a public key.

What is stored in the block chain :
- addresses
- public keys of spent coins

What you really need to get and control coins is :
- private keys (public keys are generated from the private keys)

So, your private keys, stored in the wallet only, are the most important :p

I assume namecoin wallets come with a keypool of 100 just like bitcoin right?

I assume too :p

Don't forget the 100 first keys may not be generated with a fresh wallet (generate at least 1 additional address) due to a bug in bitcoin.
