namecoind name_new d/alreadyregister will charge me ?

Post by georgem »

If I use

namecoind name_new d/somename

and somename is a name that someone else already registered, I see that it charges me this 0.01 NMC nonetheless?

Why is this the case?

Do I get those NMC back?

If that name expires in a few hours then you can already issue a name_new (which costs 0.01) and wait. As soon as the name expires you issue the name_firstupdate, and the name is your's. However, if the original owner managed to issue a name_update just in time, your 0.01 are lost.

I don't think there is a way to reclaim the 0.01 NMC.
Not sure if a raw transaction helps, though.

Personally I think this is a bug that should be fixed in the client.

if you use namecoin-qt, it won't let you (unless done from console window)

I think this is sort of a known problem.. probably will be fixed with some check eventually... in fact i think i remember khal mentioning this a long time ago

So if I understand this correctly, what we would need is an updated namecoind were a json call to the name_list is being made, looking if the name is already registered and/or not yet expired.

So people will get an error message instead of losing their hard earned NMC.

Is there a bounty for this? I think I could give it a try... :-)

sorry, i've been hanging around with the devcoin people too much lately..... they pay for anything you do. Everything is a bounty/share for them. :)

Namecoin needs some big investors to donate big to the namecoin development fund.
Would speed things up a lot - probably :D

Devcoin has 90%? (can't remember) of generated coins to give away.... i think

Yup, 90%.

I think they have a future, as has namecoin.

If you are a namecoin developer you can apply for devcoins. Since namecoin is open source you certainly can apply for devcoins if you create software.

Give it a try.
