poold.py is not a good choice, AFAIK it written for simplicity, not efficiency.
pushpoold (what I use at http://dot-bit.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=154 is far better, through I modified it to fit my needs - added some more logs, etc.).
I'd recommend using pushpoold, or join some pool (my, for example).
