Merged-mining, P2Pool, sharechains

This is a new thread for exchanging ideas, technical aspects and news on merge-mining, P2Pool, sharechains.

(I'll update this OP over time and add more info and links.)

Notice: Pools and solo miners must use Namecoin Core. Otherwise you'll get orphaned blocks. See https://forum.namecoin.info/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=2354 for details.

General information:

domob's "Rough instructions for merged-mining with Namecoin Core"
Eloipool - Python Bitcoin pool server
forrestv's P2Pool github repo
(see also Finding p2pool networks.py values for new altcoins)
Lots of network and blockchain parameters of Bitcoin and altcoins in Chain.cpp of libcoin
Bitcoin wiki Merged-mining specification
vinced's merged-mine-proxy (deprecated)

I've opened a ticket on the p2pool repo to start keeping track of any progress made. I had a chat with forrestv, he has some thoughts we should keep in mind.

drazisil and I have made a little progress, figuring out things and setting up. We were having some trouble with testnet taking a while to find peers and sync up.
I think first we should try and get the pool working on testnet, see how that works and go from there.

This is off-topic for this thread, I think.

I'll turn sawa's post into an own thread directly under the Off-Topic section soon (except it turns out that sawa's pool does merged-mining).

If it does merged mining, then it's fine to keep in the Mining section. Just preferably not in this thread unless there's some explanation provided on how it's relevant to this thread. :)

Hello everyone,

I believe there is still a problem with merge mining NMC with p2pool using the namecoin-core client. I have been asking around the bitcointalk forums trying to get confirmation of anyone finding a block while merge mining NMC with p2pool using the namecoin-core client & have been unable to find anyone who has done so, while blocks were reported found using the older client on a regular basis. I thought we had cured the problem here:

https://github.com/p2pool/p2pool/issues/270

..but I think there is still a problem we may have missed - as it seems very unlikely that no blocks have been found by p2pool since the namecoin-core client was implemented. See my post on BCT regarding zero blocks mined:

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic ... sg12834620

I'm not an experienced coder - maybe domob or someone who knows more about the NMC code could have a look?

Thanks ;)

Hi p3yot33at3r,

There have been a few blocks recently that I could identify as P2Pool-mined blocks. I'm firing up my stats script right now. As soon as it has finished searching the latest 10000+ blocks (this may take an hour or so) I'll post the details here.

That would be great - thanks, although stats going back a few months would be fine, ie: from when the the core client was implemented to the present. ;)

On August 2nd, Namecoin block # 242312 was mined. This was the last old-style (V1) block.
There have been only two p2pool-mined blocks since then:

Block 253122: the parent chain's BTC mining address is 1GqdAgC1zmzLFMg3XyYctSECWUjkbT7Nv9
Block 253874: the parent chain's BTC mining address is 14N4xNSDtNYatfCgHhyRaAhdZtaczUBnAa

You are right, it looks as if some p2pool miners abandoned merged-mining, or they simply don't know anything about Namecoin Core. Is there a mailing list of p2pool miners or anything?
