The current version of namecoind is merged mining enabled (http://dot-bit.org/Main_Page). However I really do't understand the intention of this page. If you have reasonable decent versions of the clients IMHO there is no such configuation nessecary.

it wants you to sign a message with bitcoin. presumably a feature available in those clients only.

nevermind, you can use bitcoin 0.5 release and use the "signmessage" rpc command
