Holding a talk on Namecoin

Post by domob »

I will be holding a 25 minute talk about Namecoin at the Grazer Linuxtage 2015 (https://linuxtage.at/, https://glt15-programm.linuxtage.at/events/16.html). The talk is scheduled in the "developer" track. Here's what I plan to discuss:
  • Zooko's triangle with examples of systems that have "two of three".
  • Namecoin's solution with a brief reference to the Bitcoin blockchain but not too much. (There's a workshop on Bitcoin by Coinfinity and a Bitcoin booth, although I don't think they'll dive too deep into the technical details.)
  • .bit domains plus id/ for key exchange as two important use cases.
  • Name management with name_new, name_firstupdate, name_update.
  • How to set up your site to use .bit, and mention that one can also use NameID to handle user log-ins instead of a user/password database.
Does this sound about right to everyone? Do you have any suggestions / ideas for improvement?

I think that there may be quite some interesting "targets" in the audience. A group in Graz is working on a "tracking resistant" browser (Privacy Machine), there is a local Bitcoin start-up (Coinfinity) and a group is even trying to redesign the Enigmail user interface via thesis proposals at a university here.

Nice! My only suggestion is to make sure to mention the TLS aspect of .bit. Although I'm guessing you already had that.

Will there be a recording of the talk?

Great.

Then you might also want to explain how to enable browsing. Unfortunately that is still somewhat messy.
nx.bit - some namecoin stats
nf.bit - shortcut to this forum

@biolizard: Yes, of course - I'll definitely mention TLS certificates (it is also in the German abstract). I'm not sure about a recording, probably not. (If there is one, the talk will be in German.)

Since this is the developer track (and not for "noob users"), my plan is to briefly mention that browsing can be done via custom DNS servers (e. g., locally set up) and FreeSpeechMe. I want to show how the JSON of an example site might look like, so everyone gets an idea how it works and where to look further if they actually want to set up their own site in the future.

@domob Would you be interested in doing a talk or workshop together at CCC Camp?

You should give a "state of Namecoin" talk at CCC!
DNS is much more than a key->value datastore.
