To avoid filling up u/ with names that are not usernames? This method means you can assume something in u/ is the start of a linked list.

I think the equivalent for id/ names would be idd/. dd/ stands for "domain data", so idd/ would be "identity data". I don't think this is in the spec yet though (although it should be).
