We need more dot-bit websites to encourage adoption of NMC

I didn't want to hijack the thread, so I started a new one here. Here's my answer:

One thing that would make the future of Namecoin a lot brighter would be more dot-bit sites that aren't just squatting.

Not many end users want to go to the trouble of installing software and waiting for a blockchain to download, or even going to a proxy site, to view dot-bit sites when there are so few of them. There are like 30 dot-bit sites in existence, and ten of them are mine. Most of the dot-bit sites in existence are just mirrors of dot-com sites. I've actually made two dot-bit-only sites, one of them regularly updating, just to help encourage people to adopt dot-bit.

Does everyone on this site even have a dot-bit site? Everyone who believes in Namecoin should. If you have a dot-bit site, please post it below, I'll help promote it, at least add it to my list of working dot-bit sites on the MeowBit site. (Which is also linked on that new proxy site, http://bit.no.com/ )

I think we still need to encourage more developers to contribute code to improve Namecoin before it's really ready to promote to end users. So I'm trying to collect some developers willing to contribute, but it's hard getting people to work for free.

The FreeSpeechMe plugin makes it a lot easier to browse .bit websites, but it could be improved. Once it's all very easy to use & works well it'll be easier to promote to end users.

There's a .bit for my testnet faucet, http://testap.bit but it just redirects to the .pw domain for now. Once I've set the .bit up properly for that with TLS I'll be making some more websites, but they'll be on ICANN domains too.

It says it's for Windows, I don't trust Windows. It's good that more software is being developed to make it easier to browse .bit websites, but Windows isn't for me. I use Firefox, so FreeSpeechMe works for me on my desktop computers, I still need to find/make/troll some developers into making a solution for Android for my phones & tablet.

You should remember that Namecoin isn't (yet?) very censorship resistant & wont stop any censors from blocking websites without combining it with Tor, even then Tor can be blocked. It stops the US (or any other) government seizing your .bit, but real censorship systems are done at IP level, not DNS, they just use the DNS record to find IP addresses to block. So the only real censorship busting use is to use it as a short name for a tor/i2p site, along with Namecoin TLS. It might be good to promote it to some darknet websites, give them a short memorable name for their .onion site, but it's not really very useful for other websites yet. The TLS spec seems good & should be a big selling point it's free secure encryption, better than a cheap domain validated SSL certificate. Other features to make .bit more useful could be added later too, if we get more developers with more time & ideas to improve it. Once more developers start to see Namecoin as a solution for some of their problems they'll use it more & promote it more.

id/ seems more interesting & useful than d/ to me, that needs promoting more.

I'm sick of registering for websites, having to enter my email address & other details over and over for different websites gets tiring. Managing different usernames & passwords for different sites is a real hassle too & ends up being insecure for most people. I'd like to see more websites using namecoin id/ for login & registration, like https://nameid.org does. One of my next little projects is to port that login system to Drupal, then possibly other popular open source website content management systems & apps. The source code is here: https://gitorious.org/nameid/ port it to your websites so I can use my namecoin id (not the openid from nameid.org) to login & register on your websites. If you do that I'll take a picture of my friend's cat doing something stupid & upload it with my namecoin id.

If we're talking about websites to promote using .bit/namecoin then this one is in need of serious improvement too. The cookies don't work for the .bit, the SSL cert is invalid for the .info. It uses plain text login & doesn't enforce encryption. No doubt they didn't totally rewrite phpbb's insecure session handling or password hashing system either.

Spoken like a true Yorkshire man , Im a southern fairy !

Honest straight and and to the point

I do totally agree with MWD that more of US (you and me) need to start using .bit and id
How many of us can make there own web site ? (just out of interest)
Why not add a how to make a web site Video - what software is required - do's and dont's
then how and why use .bit ?

That sounds great! Let me know if you need any help. I have to admit that I've focussed more on core client development than NameID in the last time, but I'd love to see more sites use the logic, too. So it would be great to have a plugin for popular forum or CMS packages (like Drupal). You know that there's (some) documentation about how to include the authorisation logic into your own software, right?

There must be some "bomb", some huge resource(s) should create .bit mirror at least.
Let's think. It is difficult to persuade some regular press site or some bank site to integrate .bit
But there are a plenty of freedom targeted site that are always under legal pressure. For example p2p industry.
For example I noticed that thepiratebay keeps changing domains several times a year. If they created a dot bit mirror and report at their newfeed it could make a miniboom (with their several million auditorium)
And there is a plenty of p2p resources, I am sure all of them have similar problems.

Then take gambling sphere...but that it another story :D

But again, as it was said - there must be absolutely clear procedure on:
- HOWTO connect your site with dot bit
- HOWTO navigate dot bit

it must be clear and understandable for everyone, but not for geeks only.
We must have step by step tutorials, we have have video tutorials for dummies.
That is a weak point for now preventing dot bit to come in every house 8-)

No. It works on the operating systems that 80% of the world use.

It's open source. If you'd like to make it for Linux and OX, feel free. Otherwise, move along and work on the logo, because you're not helping anything by telling me that.

It sure comes off as a dick move when people spend a shit load of time doing free work to help the world and folks like you come across and say "You're doing it wrong!" without contributing anything. It's like if I built free blue houses for people and you showed up and said "build me a red one!"
