Wasn't it announced/released to the public the day after that though, the 18th? No quibbling, just trying to get it right for next year. A distributed system isn't really born until it's distributed, right?

The genesis block has its name for a reason. ("genesis" greek word for "birth")

So in my opinion birth of a coin is when the genesis block is written, it doesn't matter if there is only one guy (the developper) knowing about the coin when this happens.
