Well, Bitshares / Invictus has claimed for a long time now that Namecoin is flawed for a variety of reasons and that they can do much better (also for identities -> Keyhotee). While not following them closely, it seems as if they were mainly hyped. So far, I don't think they provided anything working yet (except Protoshares, which is just another altcoin as I understand it). They also asked for "donations for a premine" of your identities in December already, pushing forward the release afterwards.

So, currently I don't see them as much competition ... although I'm ready to be corrected, and think that a bit of competition can be healthy.

They are all looking to make just a new pumpcoin instead of helping Namecoin to come faster forward.

May be we should also use somehow this trend with creating an altcoin generator working on a chosen namespace. The coins would be all premined as namespace entries.
This could be a GUI client on top of namecoind.
May be Namecoin would gain more popularity.

The hashrate by Namecoin is next after Bitcoin but the number of nodes is even lower then by Feathercoin.
