Opensimulator + Firestormviewer + Namecoin = Internet 2.0 ?

Post by sudoquai »

Hi there,

I have a new interesting usage case / project for Namecoin:

A complete p2p user generated 3D World with inworld economics running Out-of-the-Box on a portable Linux system - Similar what Chrome OS is doing but everything 3D with an Avatar.

I dont know how much people know about Secondlife. Its a big project from Lindenlabs (http://secondlife.com) with a full user generated 3D world and inworld economics. Inworld the currency Lindendollar is used, which can be spent and earned with some sort of business, like selling clothes, avatar models, furniture and scripts.

Secondlife is a great system to browse information in 3D - some people are saying this would be the new Internet one day. The problem is: it is centralized.

Luckily they are good and working Open Source efforts for the server software called "OpenSimulator" (http://opensimulator.org) and the Viewer "Firestorm" (http://firestormviewer.org) to decentralize the idea behind SecondLife. So-called Grids (Running OpenSimulator Instance on a specific user machine) can be connected one to each other to a Hypergrid allowing people to leave their own SIM and visiting foreign SIMs on other machines.

Inworld you can easily watch websites for example (Webkit)

Problems:
- Missing decentralized currency (at the moment OMC is used from Virwox (http://virwox.com)
- Missing decentralized authentification model (you need a server preinstalled with OpenSimulator including registration)
- Hypergrids needs to know each other over Domainnames / IP Adresses

Solution:
- Namecoin

Namecoin could solve all these 3 Problems together providing a decentralized currency inworld independent from OMC oder Lindendollar. Namecoin could solve the authentification problems and .bit Project could help to provide the whole system with decentralized domains.

The idea behind it would be to combine all these pieces together in a Linux Distribution like Manjaro Linux, which is based on Archlinux (http://manjaro.org/ ) and making a Ready-To-Go decentralized Operating System to run and use a growing user generated and free 3D World like the WWW which is used today with a browser like Firefox. "Internet 3D" instead 2D.

Payment solutions have been already discussed and experimental implemented in OpenSimulator.

BTW: People are paying in OpenSimulator always - it would be easy to integrate a ton of private exchanges in OpenSimulator. The only thing would be a trust to the owner of an exchange company but this could be solved as well if company data and history is available like bitstamp.net is doing it already. An idea would be to integrate in this world a open exchange system similar to Ripple. Everything is a matter of trust.

I am interested in your thoughts and to this idea and technical possibilities to build such a system with the help of Namecoin technology.

Thank you!

have thought of something "similar ish".. but not as an environment to browse sites etc.. but this could be done with enough time/"money"

maybe after our next project Chronokings :D (mostly the way there already).

Oh nice - A blockchain powered game - must take a look at it ;) And maybe some pieces of code would be stealable :D

I was also thinking about a integrated enviroment with OpenSim in the background and a Viewer as the only interface. (Like ChromeOS).
To add Namecoin and bitcoin would make it even better :-)

First step: Make custom livecd/usb with Nvidia graphics support out of the box and open Firestorm directly after X.

Good idea. :!:

I would add another. Decentralized storage of data.
This enhancement for Namecoin we have already discussed and could benefit from it Huntecoin, Opensimulator and other Namecoin applications also.
Specifically by Opensimulator:
- some popular contents could generate money feeding the data from a centralized storage but decentralized authentication and addressing system in form of decentralized coins
- popular contents could generate revenue for the provider and and support their own decentralized storage - being in balance
- less viewed content where the provider wants high availability can pay with coins to have failure safe(and censorship resistant) availability

So from the decentralized authentication, domain, payment system would benefit all content feeders, viewers.
Contents highly popular or considered important by their provider could opt additionally for a decentralized failure safe and censorship resistant storage. It could still generate revenue or needed to pay for dependent of the balance.
Some users could participate only by providing storage space and generating revenue.
This would create a highly scalable and decentralized system(in the core) where could be attached real internet links(clear-net and by Namecoin supported dark-net links).
:) Just my opinion.

yep - trifecta of currency, identity, storage of data

specifically the data needed seems to be:
- inventory
- friends list
- profile

inventory is huge, the other two are small

Amazing - I didn't know that this thread has the most views here in the whole Namecoin forum.

Maybe we should be more behind this idea - why do we care so much about the old Internet (2D) we could form a team building the new Internet (3D) - who is interested in realizing this idea ?

This system would like Mike said benefit from Namecoin as a currency, DNS and data storage. We would have the chance to build the Internet 3D, completely decentralized, without censorship and 3D Apps, which can be intuitive used. Maybe this would be a real Facebook Killer. The Winklevoss Brothers should have a big interest in it ;)

Best regards, Sudo.

Yes, this is exactly, what i've had in mind. This system could profit amazing from Namecoin. I am not sure how to solve the inventory problem yet.
Can we just use Bittorrent for it ?

Thank you virtual_master for your idea. Do you have a clue how we could solve the decentralized database? And would you be interested in this idea as a developer and a team realizing this idea ?

I am thinking on a Linux system, which starts and you are instant in this world. All you need is to choose a Nickname for your Avatar based on Namecoin (maybe /id). Hypergrids would be connected over the .bit system and the "ingame" currency is just Namecoin - easy as that (with libcoin we could patch firestorm to use it for ingame payments over the integrated Namecoin wallet).

They are millions of people using Secondlife and they would be more than happy to be independent from Lindenlabs (they dont like Facebook to much as well).

Just to mention it: Universities start to discover the capabilities of OpenSimulator (and its very popular among them) like the Internet (2D) in the early years ...
