there is a .bit trojan now - lol
we do not expect to see it achieve mass adoption among cybercriminal
This is great news. As with Bitcoin I see this as an advantage. To stay anonymous you have to be very careful and go to great lengths. Still it is difficult for someone else to stop you.

They need to make fear with something otherwise nobody would buy their products.

Oh wow, these guys don't seem to know what they're talking about at all. First they claim over and over that Namecoin is completely anonymous; then they change their mind halfway through the paper and talk about how easy it is to link pseudonyms. And, um, do these guys have "criminal tourette's"? They use the word "criminal" what seems like every paragraph.

I also found this hilarious:
On the other hand, for all their advantages when it comes to anonymity and resistance to sinkholing, the fact that .bit root servers are not being hosted on professional servers may mean the whole setup can be manipulated by law enforcement agencies. Since the whole system relies on having available and stable DNS servers at all times, this can be the weakest link even though Namecoin exchanges can still normally continue to occur.
These amateurs at Trend Micro are clearly unaware of Convergence for Namecoin, nmcontrol, and nmcsocks.

It's actually a fairly unbiased writeup of the namecoin system.

And they finish it off with [sic] "we don't see this proliferating as a main trojan C&C tool but it's a decent DNS".

The article sounds a little fuddy but I guess that is to be expected.

The show is going on.
Now an Italian news agency took this 'research results', but even with less understanding of the facts as the original research team.

In this diverse universe, Trend Micro chooses to put the spotlight on the virtual currency Namecoin and domains. Bits, designed by exploiting the peer-to-peer networks. The particularity of the. Bit is that they are inexpensive, private, and completely undetectable. In addition to being out of the control of ICANN: characteristics highly valued in environments cyber criminals.

The fear for the eventual success of Namecoin is that it uses the same mechanism that has turned into a successful Bitcoin: Namecoin also focuses on a decentralized collective database that is being promoted through each transition and each user has full access to all domains that have been purchased or modified. Users have a portfolio that contains Namecoin, created through a process of "coining" similar to Bitcoin and every transaction is recorded in a log called "block chain".

On November 9, 144 830 were minted blocks Namecoin and performed 2,537,344 transactions. A far cry from the 26 million the number of transactions made through Bitcoin, but that should not be underestimated. Due to their characteristics of anonymity, traceability and non-low-cost domains. Bits can in fact be used as a starting point for new malware attacks. DNS Server Namecoin have already been traced in France, Holland and Germany.
So the research experts traced Namecoin DNS servers which are on the dot-bit.org first page.

Another article is then citing the previous article and referring to the
notorious NameCoin

We should develop a "press FAQ" and put it on namecoin.info so that idiot "journalists" don't post this kind of garbage quite as often.

Let's writeup an actual response and drop it to authors and the press.
DNS is much more than a key->value datastore.
