Lighthouse?

From the Feb 21 #namecoin-dev meeting notes:

Code: Select all

Jeremy asks what people impressions of Lighthouse are.
Cassini asks if any non-IT people know Lighthouse.
Jeremy says that right now, probably very few -- but most Namecoin donors are probably technically savvy and familiar with Bitcoin.
Jeremy lists 3 advantages that Lighthouse has over BountySource.
BountySource takes a 10% cut of awarded bounties.
BonutySource is subject to AML rules because they hold funds.
"As part of the cash out process we require a full name, address, and email address. We may also require that you fill out a W-8/W-9 form for tax obligations (see "Do I have to pay taxes on bounties I collect?") below."
BountySource could, hypothetically, censor us or seize funds.
Jeremy suggests a small-scale trial of Lighthouse to see if it meets our needs.
Unanimous consent to continue the Lighthouse discussion in the forum.
So yeah, thoughts on Lighthouse? Would it be useful for fundraising for specific projects/bounties?

Why wouldn't you try several, such as Counterparty and Omni, instead of just one?
Or if you don't have the resources for several, list your requirements and pick one or two that meet those.

90% of the people don't even know that crowdfunding exists, and if english is not their primary language and they didn't study anything related with economics, i'll put that on 99%.

That said, why not both, just notify it here. KYC rules allow to prevent scams, and AML are there to prevent tax avoiding, but if you are not in the US, that's not so much of a problem.

Sadly people only donate to well marketed scams like, neucoin this week, and all the other ipo coins.

Hi,

I just made a Namecoin funding project file for Lighthouse:

http://flanera.net/namecoin.lighthouse-project

I will send it to a Lighthouse server tomorrow if nobody objects.

For those without the Lighthouse client, here is the project info:

Code: Select all

Goal: 1 BTc
Payment address: 17Si1rdVd6gaYbwLq9NkXtGV9Qzt3NmTKa

[Namecoin](https://namecoin.info/) is a decentralized open source information registration and transfer system based on the Bitcoin cryptocurrency.

[Namecoin](https://namecoin.info/) squares [Zooko's Triangle!](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zooko%27s_triangle)
## What does it do?
* Securely record and transfer arbitrary names (keys).
* Attach a value (data) to the names<br> (up to 520 bytes, more in the future).
* Transact namecoins, the digital currency (ℕ, NMC).

## What can it be used for?
* Protect free-speech rights online by making the web more resistant to censorship.
* Access websites using the [.bit](https://bit.namecoin.info) domain (with TLS/SSL).
* Store [identity information](https://nameid.org) such as email, GPG key, BTC address, TLS fingerprints, Bitmessage address, etc.
* Human readable Tor .onion names/domains.
* File signatures, Voting, bonds/stocks,/shares, web of trust, escrow and notary services (to be implemented).

Hi,

While I don't have the Lighthouse client installed on this computer and therefore cannot verify that this file matches the description posted above, I can confirm that the above quoted description is accurate in terms of the payout address being what's on the Namecoin website. I would ask that you make it clear that while the address is accurate and the Namecoin developers will certainly be able to use any raised funds to advance the project, this fundraiser is not directly operated by the Namecoin developers (much like how the successful GPG fundraiser was not directly operated by the GPG developers).

Other than that, I don't have any objection to you posting a Lighthouse project, although I'd prefer if Phelix reviews it as well before you upload it (if that's okay with you).

Thanks for helping!

No problem, I'll wait until Phelix reviews it.

NMDF currently holds something like 4BTC and 2000NMC. So a general lighthouse project is not appropriate until we have invested some of that into bounties.

Also I think it would work better if the lighthouse project would be linked to a particular task.

Seems logical. I see that you posted a Spring Bounty Cornucopia. Nice :D

Not sure about that. Decentralization nerds have heard of Namecoin and they may want help to fund "the project" if needed. Now, I feel that donations to fund "NMControl TLS without convergence" would be harder to get. Anyways, I will not upload the file to a lighthouse server if there is no consensus here to do so.

An idea: 1 BTC to add basic NMC tx support to libbitcoin. If it works we may do another one to fund libbitcoin name operations, then another for sx tools, ...
