DNS problems

Post by Xiribe »

Hi I wonder if somebody could explain to me a bit about how the DNS system is working. I registered my domain last week with dotbit.me and while the domain is being picked up by their dns server and myname.bit it is not being picked up by any of the other dns servers listed.

If you can provide the name of the domain in question (either publicly or via PM), I can check whether it's working on my end.

t100.bit and www.t100.bit are both resolving to 77.247.178.51 for me with no errors (using nmcontrol + namecoin-qt). So the problem is most likely the DNS server you're trying it with. Using volunteer-run DNS servers carries risks, one of which is that a configuration error will make some domains unreachable for all users of that server, as you've discovered. This is one reason why more work is needed on making trust-free solutions easier to use. (If you're okay with some initial setup effort, look into nmcontrol, and optionally Convergence for Namecoin -- both of those are able to work without needing a 3rd party DNS server.)

Thanks I'll do that.

I still find it odd dns.dot-bit.org does not resolve the domain, neither is it listed on the domain list http://dns.dot-bit.org/domains.php

Does anybody know how this list is generated?

If you apply the method as described in
http://dot-bit.org/How_To_Browse_Bit_Domains
but use bitmaster's DNS server 95.211.195.245 instead of khal's
then http://t100.bit/ resolves perfectly.

This list is out-of-date.
