ShapeShift supports transfers into and out of NMC now so I suspect this is a non-issue.

The specific error *seems* to be that it is stopping after the first match.

There's a simple fix, although I don't know if it's practical. Simply make the domain available again if it doesn't resolve to an actual website within, say, 3 months.

And single empty placeholder pages don't count.

The blockchain explorer at https://explorer.namecoin.info/ is not returning complete queries. I checked for coinstash.bit and it only returned bitcoinstash.bit whereas the explorer at http://namecha.in/ returns both domains.
