Merge/deprecate one of: id or p namespaces?

These two namespaces seem to be fulfilling the same role, so can we either merge them or deprecate one of them? My vote is for 'id' to stay, and for 'p' to be merged into it (or deprecated).

Please feel free to enlighten me and point out where I'm misunderstanding their purposes (if I am).

Re: [SPEC] Domain name specification

Let me rephrase that: A DNS server which supports Namecoin and DANE basically allows software which was designed for DNSSEC to interoperate with Namecoin. My understanding is that there's a branch of nmcontrol which supports DANE, I haven't tried it out though. OK thanks, that clears some of it up,...

Re: New size of the value field

Basically, if you possess the entire blockchain, no one can tell which names you're looking up. With a lite client, the nodes from whom you request data will know which names you're looking up. It would be possible to ask for more data than you really need, e.g. downloading all current names in an ...

Re: [SPEC] Domain name specification

DANE basically allows software which was designed for DNSSEC to interoperate with Namecoin. That's not clear to me. DANE has nothing to do with Namecoin, it was not designed with Namecoin in mind, so saying that it "allows software [..] to interoperate with Namecoin" sounds misleading to me. I'm st...

Re: New size of the value field

It will be possible to build lite-clients with strong security. So not every user has to download the blockchain. However, this will impact privacy, so I would agree that users should be able to download the entire blockchain if possible, or at least download an entire namespace. Can you elaborate ...

Re: [SPEC] Domain name specification

Are you aware of DANE ( http://tools.ietf.org/html/rfc6698 )? Basically, the idea is that domain owners can publish their server certificates as DNS RRs. So, if you have authenticated DNS as in DNSSEC (or Namecoin), you don't need certificate authorities anymore. I had heard of DANE, but I only hea...

Nope, wasn't aware. Thanks much for mentioning. I'll be studying it in depth now. You can probably expect to get feedback in the next few days. ^_^

Great job btw (I hope)!

FYI, a system using Namecoin that eliminates x509 Certificate Authorities is coming.

Re: [SPEC] Domain name specification

SSL certificate verification Another aspect is support for SSL-enabled sites. There isn't much chance that the SSL root certificate issuers are going to be willing to hand out valid certificates for the *.bit TLD. Yet without SSL, your data is not just trivial to sniff, but also to modify in transi...

Re: New size of the value field

As namecoin seems more a "public index" than a "distributed storage" What about, instead of storing the GPG key in the blockchain, storing a GPG_key_server_name.bit instead, hosting the keys with the same id/ ? 9k is too much I think , 1k is maybe enouth to store any "reference" to a data but not t...
