Looks like the process is very restrictive and each round of applications may take a year or more to complete, so if nobody tries to grab .bit during the first round we may be able to build in the meantime a solid community backed by orgs like the EFF and FSF that will help us dispute .bit registra...

ICANN has nothing to do with .bit domains. think of a long time ago how we did not have domains and used hosts files instead, well in a way this goes back to that.
if you mean the ICANN is making a new TLD by the name of ".bit" then it probably trivial to change the software.

how to backup properly
I used the backup wallet command to backup my wallet file, does that contain all the required files including domains and such, or is there another file I must back up as well?

"d/" prefix is always required to register a domain name. Other prefixes will be used for others things. The "d/" prefix is required (for each command) for your domain to be recognized by the existing 2 DNS servers. then in 12 blocks the wiki says i have to have json encoded nameserver info, how do i format this? I now have 23 namecoins, i ran
namecoind name_new ctoon6
it returns 2 values
then in 12 blocks the wiki says i have to have json encoded nameserver info, how do i format this? and do i need the d/ before the name for name_new?
